The Ambassador 7 May, 2002 Dear friends of Norway in San Diego: I extend my most sincere greetings to all fellow Norwegians, Norwegian-Americans and others in The Greater San Diego region who celebrate Norway's Constitution Day on 17 May. As we celebrate 17 May this year, Norway and the United States stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight for freedom and in embattling terrorism. On this day of celebration, our thoughts go to the men and women who have made personal sacrifices to defend our freedom and the democratic values we celebrate here today. This year marks the 175 anniversary of the first public 17 May festivities in Norway. In 1827, flags and banners were displayed in a parade in the city of Trondheim just as it is in San Diego in 2002. I wish you all a Happy 17 May celebration, and congratulate Consul Oswald I. Gilbertson and the other organizers with hosting the festivities in San Diego.
